Jazz at Progress: The Orphy Robinson Quintet: Bobby Hutcherson Project
Vibes player and multi-instrumentalist Orphy Robinson, whose services to music were recognised by Her Majesty the Queen in Her Birthday Honours List of 2018 with the award of the MBE, will be presenting his ‘Bobby Hutcherson Project’ on the stage of the Progress Theatre, Reading on Friday 17 May.
Orphy first assembled an ensemble in September 2016 to pay homage to his musical hero Bobby Hutcherson, a performance voted ‘Live Experience of the Year’ in the Jazz FM Awards for 2017, a few weeks after Hutcherson’s death at the age of 65. Though Bobby had slipped into the backwaters of the US jazz scene in the latter years of his career, he left a rich legacy of recordings on the legendary Blue Note label, as leader of his own bands and as a side-man with such giants as Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp, Hank Mobley and Jackie McLean amongst many others. A deft and technically excellent vibes player and gifted composer, Hutcherson managed to traverse the straight-ahead contemporary jazz of the time, with one-foot firmly placed in the innovations of free-form.
‘There’s a world of music you can now discover far more easily than my generation could,’ writes Orphy Robinson, ‘but some records cut through and stand the test of time. We want to carry forward those happy memories and celebrate a key part of jazz history, as well as introducing a new generation to it.’
Orphy, playing vibes and marimba, will be joined by an all-star quintet comprising, Tony Kofi alto saxophone, Robert Mitchell piano, Dudley Phillips bass, and Rod Youngs drums.
