Jazz at Progress | Greg Abate & the Craig Milverton Trio |
Fri 12 July | Progress Theatre, Reading | 7:30pm | £18.00 (£16.00 concessions) plus maximum 5% booking fee from www.jazzinreading.com
Greg Abate alto saxophone, Craig Milverton piano, Sandy Suchdolski double bass, Nick Millward drums
Multi-reeds player, Greg Abate hails from Rhode Island USA and is a regular visitor to the UK with tours and festival appearances. He studied at Berklee College of Music in the 1970s and after early experience with the bands of Ray Charles and a revival of the Artie Shaw band he formed his own group, Channel One, in 1978.
He later ventured out as post hard bop soloist playing jazz festivals, jazz societies and jazz clubs across the world. He never fails to deliver a storming set. A powerhouse of a player, the sharp angularity of his phrasing and startling pauses in his fast-moving lines, gives his work a feeling of constant invention and creativity.
He will be joined by the Craig Milverton Trio, a favourite of the festival circuit. As well as leading his own groups, Craig’s Oscar Peterson /Bill Evans inspired piano playing has graced the bands of Humphrey Lyttelton, Paul Jones, Digby Fairweather and George Melly through to hard boppers like Peter King, Don Rendell and Jean Toussaint. The trio will be rounded off by Sandy Suchodolsky on bass and the driving swing of Nick Millward on drums whose CV includes Kenny Ball, Chris Barber and Alan Barnes.
This is guaranteed to be an evening to remember!
