INDUSTRY NUGGETS

 

 

 

For many of us, funding is an important step in our career paths. Not only does it provide money to achieve our visions, but the application process also helps ourselves and wider networks understand and plan how we intend to move forward in our careers. We’ve compiled a condensed and easy to digest overview of major funding opportunities for musicians currently open or about to open in the UK. Take a scroll and see if any are suitable for you and your career goals.

ArtsCouncil 

Fund: National Lottery Project Grants

Grant Range: £1,000 – £100,000

Deadline: Open to applications on a rolling basis until April 2021

Who can apply?: Individuals, organisations, museums and libraries

Overview: They can support projects that directly create and deliver creative and cultural activity and content for audiences, visitors and digital users, and also those that have a longer term impact on strengthening the sector, such as organisational development, research and development and sector support.

Fund: Developing Your Creative Practice

Grant Range: £2000 – £10,000

Deadline: Round 9 closed for applications on 18 February. Further rounds of DYCP will be announced soon.

Who can apply?:  independent cultural and creative practitioners

Overview: to take a dedicated period of time to focus on their own cultural and creative development, and take them to the next stage in their practice. To be eligible for this programme your application must identify a clear development opportunity. This could be for a period of research, time to create new work, travel (including international working), training, developing future ideas, networking or mentoring. Developing your Creative Practice encourages development by enabling people to innovate and take creative risks, work in new ways and to eventually reach new audiences.

HelpMusicians 

Fund: Do It Differently

Grant Range: 

Deadline: Applications open again May 2021

Who can apply?: professional musicians of all genres and disciplines, with a focus on independent music creators who are controlling one or more aspects of their career. You can be a solo artist, composer, group member, songwriter, producer or a multidisciplinary artist. This is not a fund for organisations.

Fund: Transmission Fund

Grant Range: up to £1500

Deadline: Opens 15th March, closes 12th April

Who can apply?: The support is open to emerging and professional musicians of all genres and disciplines. As an individual you may be an instrumentalist, composer, producer, conductor, vocalist or singer- songwriter etc. They can also support bands or ensembles consisting of 6 members or less. 

Overview: This fund supports opportunities that enhance your skills or artistic practice. This could be a virtual conference to learn more about the industry, an online course to enhance your skills, 1:1 coaching or an online masterclass with an expert, or perhaps some time to work with a mentor.

Fund: Ian Fleming Musical Theatre Awards

Grant Range: Help Musicians launched the Ian Fleming Musical Theatre Awards to help musical theatre students with the costs of final year undergraduate or postgraduate study.

Deadline: open from January 2021 for courses starting Sep 2021.

Who can apply?: open to students who are either wishing to complete their final year of undergraduate study or undertake a postgraduate degree in September 2021. 

Overview: The awards are only open to students who wish to study performance at the following conservatoires or performance institutions:

Fund: Sybil Tutton Opera Awards

Grant Range: Help Musicians launched the Sybil Tutton Opera Awards to help opera students with the costs of postgraduate study.

Deadline: open from January 2021 for courses starting Sep 2021.

Who can apply?: open to students who are hoping to start a postgraduate degree or move in to a second year of postgraduate study in September 2021.  

Overview: The Sybil Tutton Opera Awards are only open to students who wish to study Opera or Repetiteurship at the following conservatoires or performance institutions:

Fund: Peter Whittingham Jazz Award

Grant Range: up to £4000

Deadline: Opens in December 

Who can apply?: open to emerging and early career jazz musicians and groups with the creativity, ambition and commitment to develop a sustainable career in jazz. They are looking for music creators who are at a tipping point in their career and who can demonstrate that their proposed project will help them reach the next stage of their career.

PRS

Fund: The Composer’s Fund

Grant Range: up to £10,000

Deadline: 28th May 2021

Who can apply?: Available to composers who are already making a significant cultural contribution in the UK and have the potential for greater impact in the UK and overseas.

Overview: Managed by PRS Foundation in partnership with Jerwood Arts The Composers’ Fund supports up to 15 composers per year who can make the case for the kind of support that would enable them to make a significant step change in their career.

Fund: Women Make Music

Grant Range: up to £5000

Deadline: 14th June 2021

Who can apply?: The fund can support projects by women, trans and non binary songwriters, composers, artists, bands and performers who are writing their own music.

Overview: Women Make Music supports the development of outstanding women, trans and non binary songwriters and composers of all genres and backgrounds at different stages of their career.

Fund: The Open Fund For Music Creators

Grant Range: up to £5000

Deadline: 14th June 2021

Who can apply?: The fund can support projects by songwriters, composers, or artists, bands, producers and performers who are writing their own music or commissioning others.

Overview: If you are a songwriter/composer you will need to tell PRS why this particular activity is so crucial to your creative or professional development.

If you are a solo performer or small performance group commissioning others, you will need to explain why your project is so important to the songwriter or performer you are working with.

Sentric 

Fund: Academy Fund 

Grant Range: up to £1000

Deadline: Rolling – 12 Artists chosen a year 

Who can apply?: Sentric Members (Free to join), solo artists, bands, any genre

Overview: The grant can be directed toward any area of your work: writing, recording, marketing, touring, production gear, etc…
