INTERCHANGE is an exciting & diverse new initiative, championing the music of the nation’s most innovative female jazz composers & improvisers, through an annually rotating, ever expanding, pool of female performers & composers – Pushing at the boundaries & blurring all the edges!

Formed in May 2017 by multi-award winning composer, conductor, baritone sax player and educator Issie Barratt (funding by Arts Council England and PRS for Music Foundation), INTERCHANGE has been taking the UK by storm performing at major UK venues and jazz festivals.

“I’ve been wanting to work with each of these amazing musicians for years – avidly listening as they each forge their diverse & vibrantly creative pathways across the international scene, sharing a mutual keenness to be bold & adventurous with their ideas. Their compositions are highly programmatic & often deeply personal, keenly exploring the full emotional spectrum, while pushing the composed & the improvised to the max. This year’s audience, reviewers and promoters’ feedback shows how this hand-picked ensemble provides the listener with a unique & exciting programme that offers a broader, more diverse experience than any audience might typically hear!”

“Absolutely cracking show! And what a turnout! Amazing to see so many talented people at once – Really enjoyed it!”
“Great role models for girls too!”

Because of these musicians’
a) Significant experience across all genres (jazz, pop, classical, world music)
b) Diverse cultural background (e.g. parents from two different nationalities, working and studying with musicians from different musical cultures, living in other countries)
c) Vast experience as educators, as well as performers and composers

Everyone in INTERCHANGE is keen to engage more women in improvisation and contemporary jazz. Many young female musicians still shy away from high-end opportunities because they feel the culture, not the music, is too macho, competitive and gladiatorial and not a place for women. INTERCHANGE helps dispel that myth by promoting and celebrating an alternative perspective, often accompanying live-performances with open rehearsals, workshops, seminars, symposiums, mentoring & preconcert talks
